Site excavation at the new Main Library and Bawcutt Centre (formerly known as the Paris Old Town Hall) takes place this Thursday, August 8, with the digging of multiple test pits. The purpose of digging the test pits is to confirm that ground conditions align with the geotechnical data on file, in preparation for tender release and eventual construction.

Excavation is overseen by Collaborative Structures Limited (CSL). Residents can expect to see machinery on-site for digging.
About the new Main Branch Library:
Community efforts to save, preserve, and re-purpose the Old Town Hall began in the 1980s. County Council purchased the building in 2015 with the support of a $1,000,000 donation from Skystone Media CEO Linda Schuyler. The building was renamed the Bawcutt Centre in honour of Schuyler’s father, Jack Bawcutt, a former mayor of the Town of Paris.
Designated as a National Historic Site, the building is the oldest example of a Gothic Revival-style civic building in Canada.
Through a complete restoration and expansion, the building will become the home of the new Main Library and Bawcutt Centre, serving the community with public access to literacy, arts, culture, heritage, and more.
In June 2023, County of Brant Council approved the project for construction, pending tender award. Tender results are expected in late fall 2024 and will be presented to Council for final approval. Updates will be posted at brantlibrary.ca/NewMainBranch.
