County of Brant Public Library Launches Overdose Harm Reduction Program

Brant County - Wednesday, December 20, 2023

In partnership with the Brant County Health Unit (BCHU) and as part of the Ontario Naloxone Program, the County of Brant Public Library now offers free naloxone kits to the community. Residents can pick up naloxone kits at any library branch in Brant County.

“Drug poisoning and opioid use impacts communities both large and small and can leave families and friends feeling overwhelmed,” says Kelly Bernstein, Library CEO. “Naloxone kits are user-friendly and enable anyone to intervene quickly which can make all the difference. We’re fortunate to work with the BCHU to support the community and increase access to this life-saving tool.”

Naloxone, also known by the brand name Narcan, works quickly and temporarily reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. During an overdose, the individual’s breathing slows or stops entirely. If used immediately, naloxone can help them breathe until first responders arrive. Kits include 2 doses of nasal naloxone spray, instructions, and other first aid tools like nitrile gloves.

Community organizations, including libraries, can play a crucial role in harm reduction and community health and safety. CBPL is the first public organization in Brant County to offer naloxone kits.

“Involving County of Brant Public Library branches as distribution centres really fills a gap in access to naloxone and increases our chances of preventing overdose deaths in Brant,” says Alyssa Stryker, Drugs Strategy Coordinator for the BCHU. “By making these resources readily available, we aim to create a supportive environment that emphasizes understanding and reduces the stigma associated with drug poisoning.”

Quantities are limited to two kits per person per visit. Residents with questions about picking up a naloxone kit at the Library can contact staff at 519-442-2433. For additional information about opioids and harm-reduction strategies, visit bchu.org.
